In case you’ve been hiding under a rock you may may not have heard about this years Kings Of Concrete Festival.
What is it? It’s 4 days of fun is what it is! There’s something for all ages and teaming up with The Tall Ships Festival, the combined events expect to have up to one million visitors to the Liffey Basin over the four-day duration. There’s stuff to do outdoors, and there’s stuff to do indoors: Skaters. BMXers. Street Artists. Photographers. DJs. Musicians. Wakeboarders. Kids Cubes and a host of other Concreations.
Now in its SEVENTH year, the hugely popular Festival is, for the first time, leaving its original home at Wood Quay to the wider realms of Grand Canal Dock.
For the first time since its inception, Kings have developed a full indoor venue as their headquarters. This will house amongst other things, an indoor ramp and an art exhibition in a base that offers a relatively quieter haven, removed from all of the Kings’ outdoor events taking place over the duration at Hanover Quay.
When I spoke with the organisers of the event they explained to me:
The main focus for this weekend is the addition of water activities such as Wakeboarding, Slippery Pole, Gladiator Battle, Blob and the indoors fun incorporating the Warehouse Exhibition, the Indoors Workshops, and Dr Sketchy Anti-Art School Show. Our audience is mostly kids, teens, young professionals, but it s a family oriented event with plenty to see and do to delight the whole family.
If I was to describe our goals in few words, we are a celebration of Urban Culture… it’s all about the fun!
Along with other surprises, expect a giant robot arm smashing its way out of the Grand Canal Dock basin, a floating crazy golf hole, a floating foamed Gladiator platform hosting 1-on-1 bouts, a giant inflatable water trampoline and a retro futuristic gaming arcade. Well, we did say it would be fun!
What makes the Festival special is the people. I’m not just talking about the people that put so much time & effort into organising such a spectacle. Nope, I’m talking about YOU. You are the people that come down to hang out, skate, roll, bust-a-move, paint, play, compete, perform, hit the rail, backflip off the ramp into a foam pit, take the water slide route into the grand canal basin, sit around and simply take it all in, and everything else that adds to the atmosphere.
This year expanding the possibilities that they envision creatively, the Kings will share all of this and more with you in their exciting new basin location and their shiny new warehouse venue.
But that’s not all! There is the Nikon Capture Kings Competition with a whopper DSLR up for grabs along with the salubrious Kings Of Concrete title – submit your entries to [email protected]….. Do you think you can cut it? Check out last years winning entry:
